REDD+ and forest protection on indigenous lands in the Amazon

Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+) was introduced by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) as a mechanism to reverse loss of forests carbon stocks in developing countries. REDD+ operates basis performance-based payments. This article focuses market-based voluntary market (VCM). It assesses viability using indigenous lands Brazilian Amazon examining three key aspects REDD+—the legal, technical requirements—in light recent policy developments Brazil under UNFCCC. VCM currently faces significant barriers useful tool for protection Amazon, due lack an international UNFCCC, highly complex requirements, low demand credits VCM. Moreover, we suggest that, although legally possible law, projects may not be suitable option communities current national climate context.
